Deacon had thought it would be hard to set up something like this. One phone call to Ash and minutes later, several of the Ice Rockets were onboard, despite it being Valentine’s Day. He supposed none of them could fathom losing the ice. Deacon had to admit they looked like they were having fun. He couldn’t risk his heart by joining them. Ice skating was too strenuous of an activity for him now. He loved watching Blake smile, though.

His mind kept wondering back to their day together. Everything had been perfect. His thoughts went even deeper, going back to their shared shower. Fuck. Blake had been so responsive. So needy. Deacon hadn’t felt that desired in a long time. For him, sleeping around had gotten old a long time ago. Most people only wanted him because of his career. They were always so excited to fuck the rock star. Blake had wanted him. Deacon’s skin burned just thinking about it. They still hadn’t done more. In a way, he understood. More than that. In a huge way, he agreed. Blake’s bones were still healing, and Deacon didn’t want to hurt him. Hell, anytime he lifted Blake into his arms, he worried he might re-damage something. He couldn’t imagine sex. Blake had to be ten times more paranoid. He was the one who experienced the pain. Even tonight had been a risk.

Watching Blake now, he knew he had made the right call. Ash and his team were experts. They knew how to make this fun while keeping Blake safe. They also kept taking breaks, letting Blake catch his breath while they chatted center ice. Then they would be off again, and Blake’s squeals of laughter caressed Deacon’s ears. He loved that sound. Deacon loved him.

The emotion had been growing since day one. They slept in the same bed every night and shared every meal. There had been more intimacy between them than most people shared in years of marriage because they had started with the worst of times. At times, their moments had been humbling for both of them. They had been raw and real. Now, Deacon knew they were headed toward a brighter season. Things would only get better from here, and Deacon wanted to be at Blake’s side for every second of it. They had so much to offer each other.

Unfortunately, a couple of dark clouds loomed heavily. It was only a matter of time before Blake left and they still hadn’t caught his attacker. Deacon didn’t want him to leave. He damn sure couldn’t handle the thought of Blake out in the world unprotected. Deacon didn’t know how to stop any of it. Every day, he woke up expecting it would be his last with Blake. Blake had already brought up leaving once. Short of kidnapping Blake, Deacon couldn’t actually make him stay. Everything felt like it was slowly slipping through his fingers… again.

By the time they pushed a smiling Blake to the edge of the ice, Deacon’s mind had turned black.
